Week of Oct 19: Late October at the hives + where to find us
Hey neighbors,
Cool mornings in the low 50s, sunny afternoons around 70 and a steady breeze off the water. That's late October in the Lowcountry. The bees are bringing in the last of the fall bloom and settling in for winter, and so are we.

If you keep bees: this week
Feed light hives while it's in the 70s. Highs near 70 this week are warm enough for bees to take 2:1 syrup. Feed inside the hive, not in an open feeder.
Wipe up every drip. It's dry with little coming in, so spilled syrup or a hive left open too long can start robbing fast. Work quickly and close up.
Heft and write it down. Tip each hive from the back (a luggage scale works) and note the weight, so you can track stores this winter without opening the box.
Treat mites if your count is high. Less brood and cooler temps help treatments like an oxalic acid dribble work well. Follow the label's temperature limits.
Check the top boxes for small hive beetles. Fill traps only halfway with oil, and keep pollen patties small.
Batten down for the wind. Gusts of 25–30 mph are forecast this weekend. Strap or weight your lids and do inspections on the calmer weekday afternoons.
