In October 2026, Lowcountry Bee Works removed a colony of about 30,000 honey bees from the crawl space of a home in Moncks Corner, SC. The bees were removed alive and given a new home at our apiary.

What we found

The colony had built its comb on the underside of the house in the crawl space. The comb covered an area about 16 inches by 36 inches and hung about 12 inches deep. The homeowner said the bees weren't there last year, so they most likely moved in this spring. That's a lot of comb for one season, and it shows how quickly a healthy colony can settle in under a home.

How we removed them

This was a cut-out. We carefully cut the comb away from the underside of the house and moved the bees into a hive box. Comb full of brood (developing young bees) was rubber-banded into empty frames so the colony could keep raising it in their new hive. Saving the brood gives the colony the best chance of thriving after the move.

Where the bees are now

The colony is now living in a hive at our apiary, where it can keep growing and making honey.
